(The Center Square) – A new poll shows a close race in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, with cost of living topping voters’ concerns.

Democratic former Rep. Elaine Luria received 46% support to Republican Rep. Jen Kiggans’ 43% in the Christopher Newport University Wason Center survey released Wednesday. The difference falls within the poll’s +/- 4% margin of error, meaning a statistical tie.

Another 10% were undecided, and 2% said they would vote for someone else. Percentages may not total 100% because of rounding.

The survey interviewed 702 likely voters in the district Oct. 1-10 through live telephone calls to cellphones and landlines.

Cost of living was the top issue for 24% of respondents, followed by threats to democracy at 20% and immigration at 11%.

Priorities differed by party. Among Democrats, 32% named cost of living as their top concern, as did 25% of independents. Immigration ranked first among Republicans at 24%.

Asked which candidate would better handle cost of living, 48% chose Luria and 39% chose Kiggans. On crime, 45% chose Kiggans and 42% chose Luria. The candidates were tied at 44% on gun policy.

Luria received 45% support among independents, compared with Kiggans’ 38%. Both drew strong support from their own parties, with 92% of Democrats choosing Luria and 94% of Republicans choosing Kiggans.
